This tribute to Jean-Michel Basquiat is also an exploration of my life, legacy and journey as an artist. Titled “JM = MJ” this portrait is a reflection of my growth this past year, where I’ve struggled with growth, learned more about myself and my family, pushed myself beyond my limitations, and found out what I’m truly capable of.

Growing up outside of New York City it was hard to avoid Basquiat’s influence on culture and street art, from inspiring some legendary music from @jayz and @smokedza to flooding the walls and streets with crowns well beyond his demise. His imagery remained present throughout my childhood, so much so that my signature is actually a reimagination of his crown, with the inner dot representing me and the outer dot reflecting the artists that have inspired me.
